The Vigiles Urbani: Watchmen and Firefighters of Ancient Rome
Vigiles Urbani: Guardians of the Eternal City
Vigiles Urbani
In the bustling heart of Ancient Rome, the threat of fire loomed, with over-crowded streets and densely packed and poorly constructed insulae. Recognising the need for a dedicated force to protect the city from such perils, Emperor Augustus, in 6 AD, established the Vigiles Urbani. Inspired by Alexandria’s capable “Sparteoli” (the “little bucket fellows”), the Vigiles soon became a familiar sight, patrolling Rome’s avenues by day and keeping a vigilant watch by night.
Originally composed of slaves, the Vigiles evolved over time, welcoming freedmen and eventually Roman citizens into their ranks. Their structure drew upon the military organisation of the legions, divided into cohorts and centuries, with each unit responsible for a sector of the city’s administrative regions.
While their primary duty was to enforce fire safety and extinguish blazes, their remit extended further. They became the city’s watchmen and peacekeepers, instrumental in maintaining order, especially during the shadowed hours of the night.
In Gangs of Rome, the Vigiles (Rules can be found on pages 37 - 39) bring historical authenticity to the game, ever-watchful for disorder, ready to quell trouble and safeguard the city’s citizens. Their presence adds tension and excitement, serving as both protectors and a ticking clock for any aspiring gang in the Eternal City...
