Because few people were wealthy enough to own horses, the ancient Greek cavalry was usually small.  If fielded they were used to harass and pick off warriors usually found situated at the edges of the enemies force. These javelin wielding light skirmishes were ideal for carrying the enemy and evading counter charges with ease.
